The NGO Council of Kenya has hailed the pledge by president William Ruto to completely end the culture of extra-judicial killing by police whose special wing accused of kidnapping and murder has now been disbanded.
The NGO Council chairman Stephen Kipchumba Cheboi said for a long time cases of people going missing only to turn up murdered have become too frequent and cause for great alarm.
"We fully support the president declared stand that the country must follow the rule of law without any exceptions" saying a killer squad within the police service was most disturbing.
He said President Ruto had taken a step in the right direction by disbanding the Special Servcie Unit (SSU) that was operating outside laid down police chain of command. President Ruto was meting with members of the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA).
The President had accused the SSU of being behind a wave of kidnapping and killings with the latest being the disappearance of two Indian nationals and their local Kenyan associates.
"We have decided to be a country governed by laws" Cheboi said while also warning the public against mob injustice.
